Chattooga Academy is one of LaFayette’s most cherished historic landmarks. The structure, completed in 1836, was later renamed John B. Gordon Hall after General. John B. Gordon, who attended the school as a child and also served as governor of Georgia. General Braxton Bragg planned the Battle of Chickamauga under an old oak tree that once stood on the grounds of Chattooga Academy/Gordon Hall. Chattooga Academy/Gordon Hall is believed to be one of Georgia’s oldest remaining brick school buildings.
